On Wednesday, the State of Maryland released its response to Adnan Syed’s application for leave of appeal in the 1999 case of Hae Min Lee’s murder. Syed’s application asks the court to consider whether he had ineffective assistance by his attorney, Cristina Gutierrez, who he says did not follow his request to seek a plea deal. Unsurprisingly, the state, which prosecuted Syed for the murder of Lee, has requested that the Court of Special Appeals deny Syed’s application.
The court will consider the state’s response when making a decision about Syed’s application. There is no current timeline for that decision but there’s plenty of analysis to read in the meantime:
